Parents! This year’s main fundraiser is the Montgomery Fun Run! It’s a 10-day program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on Wednesday, October 12th. Families will then have time to get pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on Friday, October 21st. We are focusing on our big goal to raise funds for educational enhancements throughout the school. In order to achieve our goal we’ve asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun.
Students will also experience an amazing character theme, BACKYARD BOX OFFICE! It’s a movie theme all about making a difference by getting into character. Our students will learn from five REAL kid difference-makers. From inventors, to world-class speakers, to business owners, to world-record holders, these five kids will inspire our students to practice the five “Character Acts” and make a difference in our community.
Donations will go toward classroom needs, teacher training, school wide events and to the entire 10-day experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!
There will be several occasions to show our Teacher Appreciation throughout the year. Our first day will be Wednesday, September 28! In honor of “Fruit & Veggie Month,” please have your child bring in a fruit or veggie for their homeroom teacher as well as for the staff member that they are paired with on the teacher appreciation list. Nominations are now taking place for one open position on the Montgomery School Advisory Council. As this position is open due to a member moving from the MES area, the position is only for a one-year term. The School Council advises the principal on matters related to school improvement, community issues, and school services among other things. The council meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2:45-4:00.
Parents may nominate themselves or others by providing a short, 100-word paragraph containing biographical information and reasons for wanting to serve before Monday, September 12, 2016. Please send an electronic copy to Ms. Bolds prior to the deadline. Elections will be held Tuesday, September 20, 2016, from 7:00AM to 6:00PM, in the front office. The Secondary School Facility Planning & Feasibility Study is a study based on public input on how to address overcrowding in middle and high schools. We are currently in the 3rd round of stakeholder engagement.

As many of you know, MES continues to be such a great school that we grow every year by leaps and bounds! However, we continue to grow, DeKalb has no long range plan for how to house students other than trailers in the parking lot. We project that after two more years, the lot will be full and our geography hampers an easy transition to using modulars in other areas of the campus. Thus, the MES School Council is asking parents to help us request an engineering study to look at our topography to see how we can use our land to more and better capacity. DeKalb Planning has told us that unless our parents campaign steadily for a study, it most likely will not happen. We will continue to see band aid solutions to long range growth issues, ones are easily predictable and need to be addressed before they arrive.
Due to this, we have a draft of a letter, complete with contacts, that would would ask every parent to send via mail or email to our board member and DeKalb officials. Due to its importance, you will receive this letter as a reminder a few times over the summer. Please take a few minutes now to let our officials know that we need an engineering study to review the best solutions to our facilities problem.
