Dear Montgomery families,
Here is an update on the DeKalb County School District’s (DCSD) Secondary School Facility Planning and Feasibility Study recommendations. On September 27, 2016, the DCSD Operations Division released their recommended proposal to ease overcrowding in Regions I and II that will be presented to the DeKalb County Board of Education for their final decision on December 5, 2016.
This plan included input from school councils and representatives from school clusters within Regions I and II, including input from Chamblee Cluster schools’ local school councils as well as parent leadership at Montgomery Elementary School (MES). Slides 14-15 in the link below articulate the revised, final proposal.
You will note the specific recommendations that affect our current cluster include:
- Keeps the magnet program at Chamblee Charter High School (CCHS) and Chamblee Middle School.
- Builds a new addition onto the existing CCHS site to house 600 more students.
- Montgomery will continue to feed into Chamblee Middle School, which will remain at its current location.
- Chamblee Middle School AND Sequoyah Middle School will both feed directly into CCHC.
- Likely removes all or part of the region currently served by Ashford Park Elementary School from our cluster.
While these recommendations don’t completely align with the recommendations our community put forth to the county, several of the key components we recommended were included. We will continue to work with the county and the other schools in our cluster to make sure the needs of our students and community are known as we work towards ensuring all students in the district receive a quality education.
Please attend one of the five Second Round Regional Public Input Meetings. These meetings are being hosted by DCSD to discuss and gather information related to the E-SPLOST V planning called the “Building S.P.A.C.E.S.” Initiative. The “Building S.P.A.C.E.S.” Initiative is an effort to determine how, where, and why future resources should be dedicated to the improvement and modernization of our buildings and infrastructure. These meetings are very important, as they will help shape how the remaining $250+ million of the new SPLOST funding (other than the secondary school facility planning funds described above) will be spent. This includes addressing the overcrowding at Montgomery, as the Superintendent has stated that he wants no more “learning cottages” (mobile units) at schools by 2022.
Our region’s meeting (Region 1) will be held at CCHS on Thursday, October 13th from 7 – 9 pm.
There will be an option to participate in an online survey. We will work on generating some “recommended actions” that you can include in your response, if you so choose.

We will continue to work with leadership at CCHS to ensure adequate plans are put in place to add classroom space as well as infrastructure space to CCHS.
